I am in southern NJ. Plants vary from one area to another.
My 1st guess would be a type of boxwood (American or English)...They are very common...They have a distinct smell (I like the smell)...They stay green all year (broadleaf evergreens)...

I would recommend taking a picture or cutting of the plant to a local garden center. You may have to go to more than one to get the right answer. Try a reputable garden center VS a chain store. You could also contact the(state/county) Agricultural Extension service in your area.
