hydrangea and rose centerpiece

Question
Hi! I have a 24 inch tall pilsner vase with a 4 inch diameter at the top. I want to submerge crystals and a dendrobium orchid and top the vase with hydrangeas and roses. I am having a hard time figuring out which wet foam to use. I've tried doing the arrangement twice and the first time I used half a circle of oasis wet foam and it did not hold the arrangement. The second time I used half a brick but had a hard time arranging the flowers into a round shape. Can you suggest which wet foam to use and how to arrange. Also, any care advice for hydrangeas, they seem to wilt quickly when not in the foam (not in water). Thanks in advance for all your help :)

Answer
Hi Bianca
You don't say how many roses and hydrangea you plan to use. Normally I would use a half brick in a lomey or plastic dish. You can round off the edges with a knife before taping it to the dish. I like the Oasis brand foam--just be sure it's not extra firm or you may break the stems of the hydrangea florets.
It's also important to re-cut every stem before putting it into the foam. Work with your arrangement elevated so you can see the underside and make sure your foam is covered.
That is the part that will be seen by the guests looking up at it.
Hydrangea should hold up well in the foam. Be sure to let the foam soak at its own rate in a deep sink. NEVER submerge it to speed up the process.  This creates pockets of dry foam inside, and your flowers won't be getting the water they need.
Good luck with your project. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.
Best Regards,
Peggy
