doggy fertilizer

Question
Hello Rick-

Thank you in advance for your time, I really appreciate it. I understand this might be an unusual question.
We have two dogs that go a lot.
I regularily scoop up the piles and bury them in our garden/dirt areas. This makes my mother livid. She insists the doggy doo is rife with parasites and that I'm potencially endangering the family. I insist that if anything the doo doo is beneficial for the plants and refuse to "package" the waste for disposal. Please help, your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
mom is right. the only way i would use fresh poop of any kind (cow, cat, human, dog, etc.) is if it was placed on a compost pile w/other organic material (grass, leaves, etc.) and allowed to decay for 6-12 months before being used. fecal material does contain many harmful parasites that would be destroyed during the composting period. that's why we have sewage treatment plants.
