Chicken Manure

Question
I live in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and would like to try using fresh chicken manure now on azaleas, hydrangeas, pansies and other shade plants.  Is it advisable to do this in November and what are the pluses and drawbacks?  Our very large lot is heavily shaded and sits on a small lake.

Answer
the nitrates and other elements in the fresh chicken manure will burn most landscape plants. you need to compost the  chicken manure for 3-4 months before applying it under plants. azaleas and hydrangeas will do best w/lower w/pH (more acidic) fertilizers. i would spread the manure now over a flat area and allow it to compost. in the spring rake/shovel it up and use it in planter beds by spreading over the ground & working it into the top 4-6". you could also apply it to lawn areas. add espoma brand hollytone available from your local garden center to the acid loving plants.
