pot/container question

Question
Hello,

I just purchased two pots/containers made out of what I believe is pumice stone. A planting hole has been carved out of the stone, with a drain hole at the bottom. Should I be concerned about planting a perennial directly into this type of container? Should I use some type of lining to protect it from any potential acid/alkaline issues that might be present, leaching from the pumice into the soil?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Tom

Answer
I wouldn't be concerned with leaching from the stone. I would however want to be careful, that what I choose to plant, will not out grow the area that is provided for the roots. If you use a good potting soil, and choose a good locaton for the pot, and make sure the soil doesn't dry out, it should be fine. The porous pots like stone and clay, tend to dry out a lot faster then plastic, and they may wick mosture from the soil when you water. You may find you need to give it extra water. Concider drought tolerent plants or rock garden plants.
