Red Powder-Puff Tree

Question
I purchsed this plant(Red Powder Puff Tree) and was told it will grow indoors as well as out doors. I have a 8" stem and no leaves or no branches (there are several/bundle of roots). I planted it in a 4"x3" pot as I was told to do. But this is all the info. I received on it. Please tell me what I need to do to get this plant to grow and it's care ?

Thank You so much
Tammy

Answer
Tammy, I would have to guess, to answer to your question. If you could give more information, I would be able to help you better. I need the Latin name and if possible the verity of the tree.
The first name that I guess is, Callistemon or Bottlebrush.
I have also heard it called Bottlebush. It could be called a "Red Powder Puff Tree" because it has powder puffs when it blooms. It could also be Melaleucas, which is closely related.
They are not hardy below 20 degrees, unless well protected. If you would like to grow this tree in a pot, it would require you to pot it up to a larger pot every year. Put it out side in good light, as soon as the night temperature is above 45. Leave it out until it is down to 35 degrees in the fall. Put it by a very sunny window and only water when the top soil is dry. If you had a cool greenhouse or solarium, the plant would be better off, but you will be able to keep it alive in the house. I don't know the zone or area you are in, but if you are in a warmer area, like zone 8, I would recommend, planting the tree outside. You would both be a lot happier. Trying to keep a tree alive in a pot year after year is not easy. They want to be in those outdoor conditions. House plants have learned to adapt to those conditions and will thrive. But a tree like you mentioned, will probably begin to show the affects of not being where it wants to be.
If I have not answered your question, you  may follow up with more information.
