What Flowers to Put in My Planter Box

Container gardening is a great way to feature flowers on steps, window boxes, or in planters. Planter box flowers can brighten up a deck or patio, but make sure they do not get waterlogged. One of the most important requirements of flowers for planter boxes, is that they must be able to be root constricted.

Large Periwinkle

The large periwinkle is known as Vinca major botanically and is from the Apocynaceae, or dogbane, family. It is a fast-growing evergreen perennial. The stems can get 12 inches with 2- to 3-inch-long dark green leaves and blue violet flowers 2 inches wide. Plant a large periwinkle in full sun or partial shade in any soil. It will do best in rich moist soil. Propagate via cuttings or shoots.

Mexican Zinnia

The Mexican zinnia is known as Zinnia haageana botanically and is from the Asteraceae/Compositae, or aster/daisy, family. It is a drought tolerant annual and it will attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the landscape. It has 2- to 3-inch leaves with a height of 2 feet and a width of 1 foot. Flowers are varied colors. Plant a Mexican zinnia in full sun. Propagate via seed in spring.

Burn Plant

The burn plant is known as Aloe vera botanically and is from the Liliaceae, or lily, family. It is an evergreen that is drought tolerant, a succulent, and a perennial. It can have fleshy leaves that get 18 inches long with grayish marginal teeth. The rosette can get 2 feet tall. Tubular yellow flowers come in winter and spring, up onto 3-foot-tall stalks. Plant a burn plant in well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Propagate via offsets.

Lily of the Nile

The lily of the nile is known as Agapanthus spp. botanically and is from the Liliaceae, or lily, family. It is an evergreen perennial. Leaves can clump to 12 inches with dark blue trumpet shaped flowers 1 to 2 inches wide. Flowers will come in summer. Plant a lily of the Nile in any soil with full sun or with afternoon shade. Propagate via clump division in spring or by seed.

Baby Rubber Plant

The baby rubber plant is known as Peperomia obtusifolia botanically and is from the Piperaceae, or pepper, family. It is an evergreen perennial. The vine like stems get 6-9 inches tall with 1-6 inch leaves in dark green. Flowers are greenish white and on 2-4 inch spikes. Plant a baby rubber plant in light organic moist soil in filtered light or medium shade. Propagate via division, stem cuttings or by leaf cuttings.

Sweet Marjoram

The sweet marjoram plant is known as Origanum majorana botanically and is from the Lamiaceae/Labiatae, or mint, family. It is a fragrant perennial that may be grown as an annual. It will get 1 to 2 feet tall with gray green leaves up to 1 inch long. Flowers are very tiny. Plant a sweet marjoram plant in well drained soil with full sun or nearly full sun. Propagate via seed or by cuttings.
