How to Make a Lavender Sachet

Overview

Anyone who enjoys the scent of lavender would delight in a lavender sachet. Imagine the sweet aroma in your linen closet or your dresser drawer when you tuck a lavender sachet in among the linens or under garments. Not only will your items have a delightful scent, but the lavender sachet will fill your closet or drawers with that beautiful smell of lavender. Dry your homegrown lavender blossoms and then make a lavender sachet to use in special places in your home.

Step 1

Clip the mature lavender blossoms from the lavender plant early in the day after the dew evaporates from the flowers. Use the pruning shears to clip blossoms that are open almost completely, removing the blossoms with 3 inches of stem extending from each blossom.

Step 2

Gather up to 12 lavender blossoms together in a bunch and secure them together with a rubber band. Hang the blossoms upside down in a warm and dry location (out of the sun) for between two and three weeks.

Step 3

Remove the dried lavender blossoms from the rubber band and use your fingers to strip the dry blossoms from the stems. Gather the dry blossoms in a plastic container while you make the sachet.

Step 4

Cut two identical pieces of muslin fabric the size you wish for your sachet (plus ½-inch seam allowance). Make the muslin pieces any shape you desire (circles or squares for example). Cut one 15-inch length of ribbon.

Step 5

Place the muslin pieces together, making sure the sides and corners (if applicable) line up. Pin the muslin pieces together to secure them.

Step 6

Sew the muslin pieces together with the sewing machine using a ½-inch seam allowance. Stop stitching before you reach your starting point to leave a 2- to 3-inch gap for filling the sachet. Turn the muslin pieces right side out.

Step 7

Press the muslin pieces with a warm iron. Press under the fabric along the gap ½ inch.

Step 8

Fill the sachet with dried lavender blossoms, using approximately ¼ to ½ cup of blossoms. Do not overfill the sachet---fill the sachet so that the lavender fills it, yet the sachet is still somewhat flat.

Step 9

Hand stitch the opening closed using small whipstitches with the needle and thread.

Step 10

Fold the ribbon in half, measure down 3 inches from the fold and place a pin at this point to mark. Position the pin on the folded ribbon to a front side edge of the sachet and use the needle and thread to tack the folded ribbon to the sachet. It does not matter what spot you choose to attach the ribbon to, but realize that whatever spot you choose will become the top of the sachet (for hanging if you desire).

Step 11

Tie the ribbon tails into a simple bow. The bow will cover the tacking stitches you made to attach the ribbon.
