Knautia macedonica

(Knautia macedonica) NOT-ee-ah mass-eh-DON-ih-kah Synonyms:  Scabiosa rumelica Genus:  Knautia This clump-forming perennial reaches 2 to 3 feet in height and nearly as wide. Small but long-lasting wine-red pincushion-like flowers form on slender stems. The rosettes of pinnatifid basal leaves overwinter. Noteworthy Characteristics:  Very drought tolerant. Attractive to bees. Care:  Grow in moderately fertile, well-drained, alkaline soil. Propagation:  Sow seed in containers in a cold frame in spring, or take basal cuttings in spring. Problems:  Prone to aphids.
