Furniture Trends: Asian Influence

Asian decor has become a popular style found in many homes today. Everyone wants to add a little zen to their lives and not just in the living room. They want simplicity and peace of mind throughout each room. Like modern interior design, Asian furniture and decor is about no clutter and bringing balance and serenity into each room.

Before you start thinking about the interior design of each room, you must first decide between Japanese or Chinese influence because they are very different. When people try to picture Asian style in the home, they most likely lean towards Japanese style. This includes natural materials like straw, bamboo, and stone. Colors are softer earth tones such as green, brown, and gray. Furniture is lower to the ground and darker hues. Silk and floral accents are common, as well as calligraphy artwork. Chinese rooms are quite different. The colors are bold and the furniture is very ornate. Red is always present because it is the color for luck, but green and yellow are good for accent colors. Dragon statues are also a must-have.

The bedroom is the most popular room for Asian interior design. The bed can be a Japanese platform bed. They are low to the ground, just like most Japanese furniture. They are sleek and simple. The bedding can be silk and have florals on them if you are going for a more Chinese look. However, if the room is more Japanese inspired, try warm earth colors. Shoji screens can give you more privacy. The rest of the furniture should be either bright red or dark brown and black. For window treatments, look for bamboo shades. Rice paper lamps and bamboo rugs will complete the room.

The living room is a great place for Asian interior design. You can show off all your artwork, sculptures, vases, and other decor items. The furniture should be neutral, light colors which are much more peaceful and relaxing. Don't choose a leather sofa. Stick with fabrics. Glass coffee tables low to the ground are again sleek and simple. Wall art can be a wide range of items depending on your taste. Pictures of Asian florals, samurai, calligraphy, or dragons are all suitable. Statues of Buddha, dragons, or geisha can adorn your tables. Don't forget to add some life with bamboo or bonsai plants.

In the dining room or kitchen, purchase a simple square table and square chairs. Use bamboo placemats on tables along with red and black dishes. Make the wall pop with silk wall prints and use an oriental rug under the table. Cabinetry should consist of dark woods. Try to incorporate water in at least one of the rooms, whether it be an aquarium or a small fountain. Everything in the room should have a purpose. There is no room for clutter and mess. With Asian interior design, you can tap into your inner zen.
