Red Dragon Flowerhorn Fish: Tips For Buying Them

If your hobby is taking care of exotic fish, perhaps you have heard about the Red Dragon Flowerhorn fish and want to buy your own. This type of fish was artificially bred by hobbyists in Taiwan and Malaysia, and prized among geomancy followers who believe the protuberance on their head as well as their long tail are lucky. Before you buy a Red Dragon Flowerhorn there are some things you should bear in mind.

First of all, flowerhorns are known to be quite territorial to the point that you cannot keep two flowerhorns in the same aquarium because they might become hostile to one another. If you do plan on buying a flowerhorn, make sure your tank has enough water - one tank will require at least 20 gallons. If your tank already has another flowerhorn, but you have more than enough space for another, you should put a plastic divider in the tank to keep them separated.

Second, where do you plan to source your Red Dragon Flowerhorn? In the US, there are breeding organizations in many states that specialize in flowerhorns, so you could search for those. It is possible to place an order online for your flowerhorn but of course that is risky if you've never bought from websites before. One reason you should be particular about the source of your flowerhorn is because some people like to know the lineage of their pet fish. If you intend to breed your fish with other fish eventually, the source of your pet becomes important for documentation purposes.

Third, is this your first time to take care of a Red Dragon Flowerhorn? If so, do you know how to care for one? The flowerhorn is generally a hardy type of aquarium fish, so you will probably have a good survival rate if you buy more than one. For food, you can give them tropical fish pellets though you may want to do research about what flowerhorns are usually fed. Their water needs to mimic the temperature of tropical waters as well. Before buying, it is advisable to inspect the flowerhorn to see if it has any visible marks to make you suspect disease. If you are buying a flowerhorn to breed it, your fish should have no visible physical defects either. (This is one reason buying a flowerhorn online may not be advisable.)

If you are patient with cleaning fish tanks, then a flowerhorn could be a suitable pet for you since they do produce quite a lot of waste. Feed them cautiously since they are voracious eaters. You could also put good lighting over the tank of your Red Dragon Flowerhorn and change their water weekly for best results.
