Plants for fall interest | Viburnum

V. wentworth

Viburnum shrubs have beautiful white flowers in the spring and showy leaves and fruit in the fall. The genus is native throughout the northern hemisphere, so there are quite a few species and cultivars. Many varieties are native to the US, and more specifically to western NY.

Viburnum wenterowrth

Viburnum opulusvar. americana (formerly V. trilobum)

Commonly called ‘high bush cranberry’ this species of viburnum is native to western New York and the surrounding area. The creamy white flowers bloom in flat topped clusters in spring. Bright red bunches of berries appear in the fall and last through the winter if the birds don’t eat them first. The fruits are edible for humans as well, although they are sour and are better made into jam or jelly.

Viburnum nudum

The native range of this species is a bit farther south than Buffalo. The white, sweet smelling flowers appear in May. Oval-shaped berries follow and change from pink, to blue to purple-black. Viburnum are self-pollinating, but fruit production is superior when there is more than one planted.
