Historical Flags and Banners - South Korea

The South Korea flag is considered by many one of the most interesting historical flags in the world. Flown from flag poles of all kinds throughout the world, the flag was first raised officially in the late 19th century. The South Korea flag is considered by many one of the most interesting historical flags in the world. Flown from flag poles of all kinds throughout the world, the flag was first raised officially in the late 19th century. Interestingly, it was then flown by both the north and the south. The flag displays the teaguk in the center portion, surrounded by 4 black trigrams, on a white background.

Like other flags of different countries, the South Korea flag has been a flying representation for quite a few years. Even though it was banned for more than 3 decades, the flag was revived by South Korea back in 1950.

The white "color" on the national flag of South Korea stands for peace and purity. The yin and yang symbol is shown in the center. In the work of the Chinese philosopher Chu-Hsi, yin and yang represented the opposing forces of nature, including sky and earth, male and female, and summer and winter. Similar meaning exists for the four trigrams, also referred to as "kwae," which may represent the seasons, the four points on the compass, etc.

South Korea borders North Korea, a region that is considered being one of the most fortified in the world. Also referred to as the Korean Demilitarized Zone, the tallest flag pole tower was build in this area by the North Koreans some years ago. Even though many claim that this tower is not in the race of being the tallest flagpole in the world, the tower does reach the considerable height of 525 feet.

Interestingly, the flag's design was very first adopted in 1882, functioning as a symbol used by the Kingdom of Korea. During Japanese occupation of Korea, the South Korean flag was banned for more than 30 years. The flag has been attached to flag poles and put on display through various other means for a few decades now.

Like other historical flags, including flags of Europe, the South Korea flag has official colors that are specified by law. Interestingly, there was not specification for shade of colors till the year 1997. It was during this year that the South Korean government determined standard specification for the national flag. South Korean flags for display from flag poles, etc., abide by these specifics.
