The balconies are ideal place for the vegetable plants to grow with plenty of sunlight but not overly so. The plants are easily accessible for maintenance and you don’t need to go out in the sun to care for them. Here are the few things you need to remember while growing your vegetables in balcony.

  • Space matters: Choose the ideal space for each type of plant. The vegetable plants that need more sunlight should be at the edge of the balcony. The chosen space should also allow free growing of the plants according to its growth requirements. The windowsill can also be used for container gardening.
  • Size of the container should be according to the plant growth. Some plants get crowded easily as they grow, such plants will need a bigger container, and the plants should also be spaced evenly to allow uniform growth.  The depth of the container is also important to allow the deep rooted plants to have a healthy environment.
  • Soil used for container gardening in the balcony should be synthetic. The synthetic soil is made of wood chips, sawdust, perlite, peat moss, and vermiculture. This soil is coarse and allows more aeration and drainage. While using compost, choose the one that is made for the container planting. It can hold on to water better than other types.
  • Packing: Never over pack the container with the growing medium. Loose packing is the best to have air and drainage. Also remember to place a layer of stones and broken pot pieces at the bottom, before layering the soil.
  • Plant the climbers near the wall to save space and allowing easy growth for them. The climbing vegetable plants can also be grown over the balcony railing to have a live green screening for privacy.
  • Watering: Never forget to water the vegetable plants, as the soil used may dry up faster. Even the rain does not reach all over these plants due to the roofing. While watering make sure you water only enough. Over watering will not help.  Do not pour the water, mist the soil thoroughly, and check with your finger if the soil is well moist or not.
  • Tilting: The soil must be poked with a stick regularly. Add the nutrients only occasionally. Do not let the water leach out the nutrients. Always use liquid feed as they are readily usable by the plants.
  • Mix n match: Mixing the vegetables in the balcony garden will make it attractive. The various vegetable flowers will look attractive. Include the herbs also to make it refreshing with more fluffy green.
